Can I Donate My Eggs More Than Once?

Egg Donation

As one of the county’s leading egg donation clinics, Manchester Donors welcomes women from all backgrounds who selflessly donate their eggs so that others can have a family of their own. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our donors and the personal commitment they make.

It is part of our job to answer all questions our donors have. One question we get ask a lot is whether a donor can donate their eggs more than once. As it is a popular question, we are dedicating this blog to the topic of repeat egg donation.

Can I donate my eggs more than once?

Yes, you can donate your eggs more than once. We have been lucky enough to have many egg donors return for a second cycle to help more families conceive. In fact, over half of the amazing women who have donated eggs with Manchester Donors have done so more than once.

Our team of experts will look closely at how well you responded the first time, as we always treat everyone on an individual case basis. As it is a huge commitment physically and mentally, we do not want to compromise your health and well-being.

How long will the process take?

Donating your eggs, the second time around is even quicker than the first time. We already have your family medical history and your pen picture, which describes you and helps us match your characteristics with one of our patients who needs donor eggs for their treatment.

Some tests need repeating, including blood and urine tests and a scan, just like last time. You will also have a virtual appointment with one of our experienced Consultants to discuss your repeat donation and you may need to schedule a further counselling session.

As soon as these appointments are completed, you will be matched very quickly with a new recipient who needs your help to have a chance of a family.

What are the set criteria to donate?

We understand you may be aware of the set criteria; however, here is a reminder of the requirements if you think something may have changed since you last donated.

  • Aged between 18 and 35
  • BMI (Body Mass Index) is between 19 and 35
  • Have not given birth in the last six months or currently breastfeeding
  • Don’t smoke, or have stopped smoking for at least three months (including the use of e-cigarettes and nicotine-based products)
  • Willing to potentially change your method of contraception if currently using the Mirena coil or implant

Are there any risks to donating multiple times?

As a regulated clinic for over three decades, we effectively reduce the risks for our egg donors. Whilst egg donation is a very safe process, it can carry very low risks to the donor. One of the side effects of egg donation is Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). It occurs when the ovaries ‘over respond’ to fertility drugs and produce too many eggs, in very rare cases.

We carry out hormone tests at the screening stage to see how your ovaries are likely to respond, and you are closely monitored during the stimulation phase with the highest standard of care. We want to reassure you that you’re in safe hands, and our experienced team are here every step of the way.

What do our repeat donors have to say?

“I have already donated twice, and I was very pleased with the number of eggs retrieved. The whole process never put me off, though, and I enjoyed every step.” Frances

“I am just about to donate for the fourth time. I have to stop after this due to my age; however, if I could carry on donating, I would because as long as I have eggs, I have the chance to change someone’s life.” Sarah

“I would 100% donate again. I loved the experience, and I love the feeling of knowing I’m helping those in need. The staff were brilliant, kind and helpful. They kept me calm. All in all, it was a wonderful and interesting experience for me.” Amelia
