Egg Donation Process: What Happens at Egg Collection?

Egg Donation

Egg collection is when you officially donate your eggs to us, but what happens when you come to the clinic to have your eggs collected?

We’ll explain what you need to do beforehand, including not eating or drinking from midnight the day before your egg collection day.

On arrival at our clinic you’ll be taken to our private ward where our experienced and caring fertility nurses will take care of you, perform some initial health checks and explain what will happen during recovery in our clinic theatre. Our nurses will be by your side throughout.

When it’s time for egg collection, you’ll be taken into theatre and given light sedation to make sure you’re comfortable and relaxed by our anaesthetist. Your eggs are then gently retrieved using camera guidance. We’ll explain what’s happening and what we can see. We’ll be able to tell you how many eggs we’ve collected for donation.

After egg collection you’ll be taken back to our private ward for observation and further care by our nurses. We’ll give you something to eat and drink and we’ll explain what happens next and the possible after-effects you can expect such as light spotting and tiredness.

You’ll only be allowed home after a few hours if we’re happy that you’re well and have passed urine. Because you’ve had light anaesthetic, you’ll need to arrange for someone to take you home as you won’t be able to drive and it’s important that you’re accompanied. We’ll give you full discharge instructions and our emergency out of hours contact numbers in case you need us.

There’s nothing special you need to do once back home, you’ll be able to continue your normal routine but you may wish to rest and take it easy. We’ll check up on you after a few days to make sure you’re well.
