Is there anything you can do as an egg donor to ensure a successful egg donation?
There’s no way to know in advance how many eggs you’ll donate or whether these will result in pregnancy for someone. But there are a few simple ways you can help get the best from your journey, for yourself and the person using your eggs:
Reduce or raise your BMI
Your BMI plays a key part in egg donation success, because being overweight or underweight can affect your fertility and how well the fertility medications needed for egg donation work for you. We ask that your BMI is within the range of 19-35 for your own wellbeing and to help ensure a positive response and a good number of quality eggs retrieved for donation.
Stop smoking
Smoking also negatively impacts fertility and egg quality so we ask that all egg donors are non-smokers and this includes the use of e-cigarettes. The good news is that you can still donate if you’ve recently quit smoking, at least three months prior to applying.
Be mentally prepared
Egg donation can be an emotional decision – talk it through with your partner, family and friends first. We’ll help ensure it’s really right for you as part of the process. We’ll talk to you in detail about all the implications of donation including through specialist counselling, so you can understand what it involves and donate eggs with confidence.
Talk to our Donation Team on 0161 300 2734 to find out more about preparing to be an egg donor. If you’re ready to donate, apply online or learn more about the steps of egg donation.
